UPGRADED MEMBERS TIPS UPLOADING FILES TO YOUR SECURE SPACE You have been allocated 350 Kb of web space for your secure form. This should be plenty, especially if you follow the useful tips below. Ideally the total size of any form you use (including the size of any images!) should be no more than 30 to 40 Kb. Web Pages that are larger than this cause delays and abandonment of forms! The maximum allowed size of any single file is 175 Kb. To upload a HTML form or an image (gif, jpg, etc.) click the BROWSE button at the bottom of the upload facility page. This will prompt you to select a file that is located on your PC. Select your file and then click the Upload button. Your file will then be uploaded to your web space. You can delete files from your web space by clicking the delete option shown beside each file that you have uploaded. You will need a CGI script to process your form. If this is located on your own server then you wil need to include the URL in the FORM ACTION tag of your form. We have created a form that is ready made and is already linked to our CGI scripts. You can edit the layout of this form to your hearts content but please do not change the name of any of the variables in it or else it will not work! It is called form1.htm and can be found in your Upload Directory web space. Delete any of the variables that you do not need in this form. The form output will be written to your Control Panel. Notice the https:// at the start of the HTML code above. This is very important as it tells the Browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, etc.) that the page they are about to view is a secure page. TIPS FOR CREATING A SECURE FORM 1. Keep it as simple and as short as possible. The idea is to encourage the user to complete your form so ask your client for as little information as possible. Do you really need to know their Fax number? Do you really need to know the Company that they work for? 2. Do not include a 'pull-down' lists of Countries or States. These can add as much as 10K extra of HTML to your form! It is often quicker for people to type in their own country rather than use the pull-downs! 3. Use images very sparingly on your forms. The idea is to get the form completed, not to distract the visitor or potential customer with fancy animated graphics. Get them through as quickly as possible. Large images take longer to load, causing delays, causing your form to be abandoned more often. If you do need to use an image (for example, a background image) then you will need to include the complete URL of it in your form. Let's assume that your user I.D. is 12345678 and you want to use an image called red.gif to be the background on your secure form. These are both examples of incorrect HTML code to put a background image on your secure form:
This is the correct HTML code: You need to include the complete URL including the https://plus20.safe-order.net part because this is the name of the Secure Server. If you do not include the full URL then your visitors will get a message informing them that the page they are about to visit includes both secure and insecure items. Supposing you wanted to include a small thumbnail of a picture that you are selling on your site. The name of the thumbnail picture image is pic.jpg These are both examples of incorrect HTML code to put an image on your secure form:
This is the correct HTML code:
In both examples above make sure that you have uploaded the
image files to your web space first!
4. Keeping the input fields 'narrow' induces the visitor to
complete the form and looks better. For example, suppose you
want your visitor to enter their email address:
This HTML code puts a field of 60 characters width onto your form:
This HTML code puts a field of 30 characters width onto your form:
Question: Which is better? Answer: The smaller one is better
because most email addresses are under 25 characters in length.
The display of the smaller field is an encouragement to the user
to complete the form.
There are occasions when a larger field size is better. For
example, if you inserted a field to allow the visitor to enter
their home address then you would increase the size to 50 or 60
or to whatever looks best on your form. This is because most home
addresses are at least 50 or 60 characters long!
